Parental leave

The term parental leave refers to the entitlement to leave from work in return for loss of pay. There is a legal entitlement to parental leave.

Part-time employment

If there are no important official reasons to the contrary, staff members may temporarily or permanently reduce their working hours at their own request. The "new" weekly working hours must be agreed with the university in compliance with the statutory provisions and recorded in a contract.

  • Evenly spread over 5 days a week
  • Blocked on less than 5 days per week
  • Seasonally distributed differently: up to full-time in busy periods, compensatory time off when workload is low (model also suitable for long holidays or sabbaticals)

Parental part-time work

General information on parental part-time work

Like regular part-time employment, parental part-time allows the distribution of weekly working hours in various ways. You are legally entitled to parental part-time work until your child is 7 years old, provided you have already been employed at the university for 3 years. Parents on parental part-time work are also subject to special protection against dismissal.

Parental part-time work can be changed once.

Breastfeeding breaks

After notification and confirmation, working breastfeeding mothers are entitled to breastfeeding breaks.

Care day release or care leave

If a child's carer is absent or close relatives or household members fall ill, employees can take time off to care for their child.
5 working days per calendar year, for children under 12 years an additional 5 working days

Care leave and part-time care leave

Care leave and part-time care leave can be taken for a minimum of one to a maximum of three months for close relatives from care level 3 and for close relatives who are minors or suffer from dementia from care level 1 in order to organise or provide care:

In the event of an acute need for care, the care allowance decision-makers are required to complete the procedure for granting or increasing the care allowance within three weeks (accelerated procedure) when declaring the intended use of care leave/part-time care leave.
